Menlo Oaks is an unicorporated area of San Mateo County in California and shares borders with Menlo Park and Atherton. It became built up over the years around the Coleman Mansion. The mansion is now the site of a private school, Peninsula School. Fittingly enough there are many who claim the mansion/school is haunted.
The lot size in Menlo Oaks is generally about a half acre with some lots that are larger and some smaller. Since it is a community that grew over time, the homes are a mix of size and style. The neighborhood started out being one of small homes on large lots. Increasingly, larger homes are coming to replace the smaller ones.
The area has a neighborhood association, the Menlo Oaks District Association (MODA), that organizes an annual picnic in June on the grounds of Peninsula School. They publish frequent newsletters to let the neighbors know of the goings on such as the annual meeting in November and other news about the neighborhood.
This year Menlo Oaks will be the place to be for trick or treating. In the past, there were very few children in the neighborhood. Our son was born in 1981 and there were only 3 or 4 other children nearby. Now we have three or four in a family. As the demographics have changed the flavor of our area has, too.
With younger and larger families in Menlo Oaks, the activities have changed. This year MODA asked that each household willing to decorate and hand out Halloween treats, sign up via the MODA email system. Today there was a map with all of the homes marked placed in our mail box. Also included are the homes that will be an adult pit stop (!), and a costume judging area. I know there are a couple of houses that go all out with Halloween hauntedness and have been doing so for very many years. All of the devoted Halloween fans know these destinations!

Happy Hallotween. Have a fun and exciting evening. Hope you have some trick or treaters knocking on your door.
Ralph, We had three kids. They are really picky guys. One picked up the wax vampire fangs in my basket and asked what they were. When I told him they were vampire fangs, he asked if they were real. I said no and he dropped them back in the basket!
Menlo Oaks is a beautiful neighborhood, Marge. I can imagine Halloween being a lot of fun there. (And perhaps more sane than Eucalyptus Street in San Carlos!)
